Graduation Qualifying Exam (GQE) Exam Information and Study Guide
The Graduation Qualifying Exam (GQE) is a test that high school students in Indiana must pass to earn their high school diploma. The test, which is in line with the state’s standard of education, measures skills and knowledge that the student has acquired to determine if they are ready to face the outside world with a high school diploma. The test is organized and administered under the auspices of the Indiana State Department of Education
Candidates can register for the GQE exam with their high schools
Candidates must have reached the second year of high school
Students, who fail the exam this first time, have up to four times to retake it in March and September of their junior and senior school years
The GQE exam is made up of two sections, the Math and English section
The Math section comprises short answer and multiple-choice questions
The English section comprises an essay as well as short answer and multiple-choice questions
The test spans three days, candidates are expected to be present for the three days of the exam
The entire allotted time for the three day exams is six hours
The math section contains questions that covers basic high school math through grade 8. Questions are drawn from topics such as geometry, basic algebra and simple data analysis.
The English/language arts section has questions that test the candidate’s knowledge of basic vocabulary and grammar skills plus questions based on literary texts. The ELA section questions cover through grade 9.
The GQE test can make special accommodation and considerations for students having special needs such as disabilities and limited knowledge of English. Granting extra exam time, altering the test schedule and resetting the exam format to suit individual needs are some of the considerations that can be given
Candidates who fail a section of the exam need only to retake the failed section
